Between the Bricks
A visual representation of the physical exteriors of locations from Jiangmen,
and digital pixel objects from memories.

About The Project
Cultural Boundaries and Memories within Architectural Structures
My parents would bring me to Jiangmen China during the summertime each year. These buildings grew more than just landmarks, but boulders that held down memories and cultural significance. I wanted to explore both exterior physique and the internal objects that formed my childhood. The audience would first see the wood constructed exterior of the building, and by tapping their cell phones near the the building, the NFC tag would be able to redirect them to these individual models on their screens.

Behind The Scenes
Fabrication and Brainstorm Process

Photo Research
Aside from recollecting key landmark locations from old photos, it was research on mapping out the different architectures within the region.

Vectorization
After gathering the images of the locations, through the usage of Adobe Illustrator, vectorized the outline of the buildings.

Laser Cutout
Once vectorized, the svg files are then transferred to the laser cutter, where partial of the patterns are engraved and the other parts are solid cuts. Slots were made to ensure the buildings were to stand upright.

Javascript P5.js
Aside from the exterior that constructs the memories, I made models of the symbolic items that can be found from within the buildings.

TESTIMONIALS
Jiangmen is a town located in GuangDong, southern region of China. I spent my summer afternoon in the neighborhoods, and it was also where my grandma once lived.
